The most renowned and widespread type of rakija in this region is undoubtedly Slavonian šljivovica (plum brandy). In Slavonia, nothing significant happens without it. Šljivovica accompanies a Slavonian from birth to death. It serves as a kind of life elixir, providing strength and offering joy. For this reason, there is hardly a rural household without its own plum brandy distillery.
Nowadays, an increasing number of small and large producers, taking advantage of their abundant plum orchards as well as other fruit orchards dominated by quince, walnut, cherry, apple, and more, craft various types of fruit brandies and liqueurs. Their products can be tasted in the welcoming environments of family estates or at hospitality venues certified under the "Flavors of Srijem and Slavonia" standard. There, rakija is often served in the traditional way—in a small shot glass (čokančić).
The rich tradition of rakija production in this region and its close bond with the daily lives of Slavonians make it well worth visiting some of the local rakija tasting rooms, such as Matko’s Distillery in Bošnjaci. There, visitors can also learn about the traditional methods of production.
