This is also the land of Zagorje turkey, once renowned as a top delicacy served at European courts, and the land of Bednjan dialect, as well as warm and friendly people. Our journey takes us to the beautiful Trakošćan region dominated by the castle of the same name, built here on the foundations of an old fortress and maintained over almost three centuries by one of Croatia's notable noble families, the Drašković family, until they emigrated to Austria after World War II. The current appearance owes much to Count Juraj Drašković, who renovated the estate in the mid-19th century, constructing a magnificent castle around the old core and creating a park and lake. At the lake's end stands a fishing lodge, now converted into an information center for the many visitors exploring this protected landscape. The castle's preserved interior and furnishings house an attractive museum with a permanent exhibition that has attracted numerous visitors for over 60 years, surrounded by a nearly 5-kilometer well-maintained walking trail around the lake. Trakošćan began its intensive tourist life in the 1950s, as evidenced by the entry in the Tourist Guide of Croatian Zagorje from as early as 1955... "Trakošćan has its own economy, bakery, its own cows... Trakošćan is a place where guests will find excellent homemade food praised by all visitors... which is already renowned in Trakošćan..." and this year, the special "lake dance" was introduced on a floating stage...
